Art has the power to inspire change, create awareness, and bring communities together. During the Suidooster Fees 2025, the Children’s Art Centre partnered with several schools to participate in a meaningful recycled art project that combined creativity with environmental awareness that was held by the Western Cape Government of Education.
Learners from Zonnebloem Boys and Girls, Seven Steps, Chapel Street, Walmer, Rahmaniyeh, and Holy Cross were invited to take part in this special initiative. The project encouraged learners from different grades to explore the impact of pollution on marine life while expressing their thoughts and creativity through art.
Turning Waste into Art
The learners used recycled materials, particularly plastics, to create artworks that highlighted the growing problem of ocean pollution. Through this creative process, the learners learned how everyday waste can harm marine ecosystems and the animals that live in them.
By transforming discarded materials into meaningful artworks, the learners not only developed their artistic skills but also gained a deeper understanding of environmental responsibility.
Supporting Seal Rehabilitation
The completed artworks were exhibited at Artscape, where they were displayed for the public during the festival. Some of the artworks were also made available for sale, with proceeds contributing toward the Two Oceans Aquarium rehabilitation programme for seals in the Western Cape.
This initiative helped raise awareness about how plastic waste and other pollutants impact marine life, particularly seals that often become entangled in plastic or ingest harmful debris.
Young Artists Making a Difference
What made this project truly special was the passion and creativity of the learners. Each artwork told a story—where waste can be used creating a beautiful artwork, instead of throwing it into nature and where some lands up in the ocean harming the animals. The learners learnt the responsibility we all share in protecting our environment.
Through their creativity, these young artists became voices for the ocean, reminding us that even small actions can make a meaningful difference.
Creativity that Inspires Change
Projects like this show that art is not only about expression; it is also about education, awareness, and hope. By encouraging learners to think about environmental issues while creating, we empower the next generation to care for the world around them.
Art becomes more than a creative activity—it becomes a powerful tool for change.
