The Children’s Art Centre was recently approached by Zonnebloem Boys’ School with an exciting request: to design and paint a mural inside the school near the principal’s office. The aim of the project is to beautify the surrounding environment and create a welcoming, inspiring space for learners, staff, and visitors.
Art teachers Mrs Chandler and Mrs Jooste began sketching and planning the mural according to the vision the school had for the space. As educators who believe deeply in the power of art to inspire and uplift, we decided to celebrate this project with vibrant colours and an African-inspired feel that reflects creativity, culture, and energy.
Murals have a special way of transforming spaces. They do more than decorate walls — they tell stories, inspire imagination, and create a sense of belonging within a community. Through this artwork, we hope to bring warmth, joy, and creative expression into the school environment.
The mural is currently still in progress, and we aim to have it completed within the first two weeks of the second term. It has already been an exciting journey watching the design come to life and seeing how colour and creativity can transform an ordinary space into something meaningful.
Even more exciting is that this project is only the beginning. Plans are already underway for a second mural that will be painted outside in the boys’ area of the school. This mural will serve as an inspiring creative space where learners can feel proud of their school and their community.
For this next mural, we hope to involve selected Grade 7 learners who show a passion for creativity. By allowing them to participate in the project, they will not only contribute to the beauty of their school but also leave a lasting legacy behind — a mark of their creativity and collaboration.
Projects like these remind us that art has the power to connect people, inspire young minds, and create spaces filled with colour, meaning, and possibility.
We are looking forward to continuing this journey and bringing this vision to life.
