Surrounded by the majestic Kylemore mountains in Stellenbosch, the Imbali Kylemore Visual Literacy Programme was established in 2001. The programme began when Yvonne Wilson and Jeanne Bestbier Bloch approached Alexis Hanslo from the Children’s Art Centre with the vision of introducing visual literacy to learners in the Kylemore community.
Since its inception, the programme has provided creative learning opportunities for 100 learners, who attend art classes once a month. Through these sessions, learners are introduced to drawing, observation, and creative thinking, helping them develop visual literacy skills while expressing their own unique ideas.
2026 marks the celebration of 25 years of this remarkable programme. Over the years, dedicated educators have played an important role in nurturing the learners’ creativity. These include Leonie Twine, Theodor van der Merwe, and our current art educator, Ursula Windsor.
The children’s creativity is celebrated each year in September, when an exhibition is held to showcase the phenomenal work produced by the learners. These exhibitions highlight the talent, imagination, and dedication that the programme has fostered over the years.
The programme has also offered memorable experiences beyond the classroom. Highlights include visits to the Rupert Gallery, as well as a special walk up to the Dwarsrivier homestead of Yvonne Wilson. On this visit, learners spent time drawing the picturesque views of her farm, surrounded by the breathtaking landscape of the valley.
For 25 years, the Imbali Kylemore Visual Literacy Programme has inspired young artists, encouraged creative expression, and strengthened the connection between art, education, and community.
